UCT Student housing 2024-2025

The University of Cape Town (UCT) offers a diverse range of housing options for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, both on and off campus.

In most cases, your stay will start in a first-tier home (full catering), shift to a second-tier home (senior catering or self-catering), and end in third-tier lodging (semi-autonomous self-catering).

Safety

Each property has its own history and set of traditions, yet they all work to make a lasting impression on guests. All flats have strict access controls, and the majority are watched over by closed-circuit television cameras since UCT places a high priority on safety.

Students with impairments

A range of housing options are available for students with disabilities. Simply get in touch with the Disability Service and Student Accommodation Office, and they will help you with your particular requirements.

University of Cape Town (UCT) First-tier accommodation

First-year undergraduate students, typically under the age of 21, are accommodated in first-tier residences. These dormitories include dining facilities where students can enjoy up to three meals a day. Many of the first-tier residential buildings provide double rooms.

In these homes, there are self-operating laundries as well as a common area for watching television, having meetings, and socializing. A lot of them have tables for playing pool and other games, and some of them have swimming pools.

University of Cape Town (UCT) Second-tier accommodation

Senior undergraduate and postgraduate students are housed in second-tier residences. In a dining hall, catering residences provide up to three meals every day. The majority of second-tier housing is in the form of 2- to 4-bedroom flats. All of the rooms are single occupancy.

The resident governance systems enable a smooth transition into independent senior student living while still allowing you to share communal space with your colleagues.

These houses have a common room where residents can watch TV, have meetings, and socialise, as well as self-operating laundries. A piano, pool, and table tennis are all available, and some even have access to a swimming pool.

University of Cape Town (UCT) Third-tier accommodation

Senior postgraduate students are accommodated in third-tier residences.

Wardens monitor academic and social well-being in these residences. The wardens ensure that the houses, flats, and purpose-built residences, such as Obz Square, have a decent communal life.

A Residence Association seeks to establish a better residence life experience due to the geographical fragmentation of third-tier accommodation.

Most units are within walking distance of the upper campus or close to Jammie Shuttle stops, and all enable easy access to stores and public transportation, with minimal furniture provided.

All residents have access to UCT athletic facilities and swimming pools, and some third-tier apartments include self-operating laundries.

University of Cape Town (UCT) Accommodation for students with spouses and dependents

Students with spouses and dependents (but only students’ own children) are welcome to stay at the JP Duminy home. It is located on Main Road in Mowbray and houses 42 students in flats that are conveniently located near the upper campus, the Jammie Shuttle, and local shopping stores.
