- The South African government provides social subsidies to citizens in need. The SASSA is in charge of social grants in South Africa. Social grants are offered to those who are on the verge of going hungry and require assistance from the government to enhance their standard of living. Among these are typically the elderly, those with impairments, and parents of young children. To be eligible for a social grant, you must be a South African citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a refugee (proof of such status must be provided). They must be South African nationals as well.
What is a means test?
- Some social benefits, such as child support, disability, care dependency, and social relief of distress, are subject to a “means test.” SASSA will use a means test to determine whether you are eligible for a social grant based on your income and assets. The means test determines whether you are eligible for a grant for people who cannot afford to live independently.
Care dependency allowance
Care dependency grants may be available to parents with disabled children who are full-time workers. What amount of money will be distributed overall as part of this grant?

How do you know if you’re approved for the grant?
- The child must be under the age of 18 and permanently incapacitated, as established by a medical officer, to be eligible for the care dependency award. - It should be noted that a person receiving a social grant cannot receive both the grant and social relief of distress at the same time. Anyone who receives both social relief and a grant at the same time must repay the value of the social relief of distress received. This will be deducted from any social grant payment, including any arrears. However, if the person receiving a social grant received social relief of distress as a result of a disaster, that amount will not be recovered.
