For South African matriculants, this is an exciting moment as they finish their schooling and get ready for the next part of their academic lives. We are proud of how well our students have performed academically and that they are now submitting their applications for admission to universities for the following academic year.

GUIDELINES

Choosing your desired course of study is the first stage. You should also have a backup or third choice available for your application.

1. Choose a course of study

• Choose your desired program of study as your first step, and have a second or third option ready to add to your application.

2. Choose your university 

• You must find out which universities provide the undergraduate degree you want. Applying to multiple universities will increase your chances of being accepted and will keep your options open.

3. Check the admission requirements

• 3.1 Verify that you meet the conditions and standards to be granted an exemption from admission to South African public colleges. The minimum entrance standards for exemption for Bachelor’s Degree purposes are summarized in the Cambridge University Recognition South Africa paper.

• The university’s undergraduate prospectus or undergraduate admissions standards paper often states the exemption requirements as well.
• 3.2 You should also confirm that you will be able to meet the minimal requirements for the degree you are pursuing. There are various subject and grade criteria for each university faculty. Students at Cambridge should review the university’s faculty requirements for overseas schools and applicants with diplomas from countries other than South Africa.
• For information on admission standards for applicants with non-South African school-leaving qualifications or prerequisites for undergraduate international curriculum, get in touch with the university admissions office or check the university website. Some institutions list these requirements in the Undergraduate Prospectus.

• 3.3 A few colleges mandate that students take the National Benchmark Exams (NBT). To find out what is needed for your application, check the specifications of the faculty and university you have chosen.

4.  Apply for admission

• Admissions applications are now being accepted. You should make sure to check the application deadlines and submit your application as soon as you can.
• The application deadlines change depending on the university and the subject. The application deadline should be confirmed with the university of your choosing. We advise that you submit your application as soon as possible because several colleges and courses have early application deadlines of June 30.
• When all of the openings for a program have been filled, the program is closed to new applicants. Admission to non-selection programs at some university faculties is contingent on space availability.
• Your GCSE and AS certificates, if you have them, must be submitted as part of the application process. You must be prepared to scan and upload these documents in accordance with the university’s specifications.
• By uploading some type of formal documentation for these subjects, you will also need to let the institution know which subjects you are still waiting on results for. While each university has its own standards, these can typically be met with a report, a letter from the institution, or a Statement of Entry that clearly states the level (GCSE, AS, or A-level) at which each subject was studied.
• Following registration of your application, the university will let you know what to do next.

5. Apply for financial assistance, scholarships, and bursaries

• To learn more about available financial aid, scholarships, and bursaries, you can phone the university of your choice or conduct an online search for funding, financial assistance, or aid. Examine the application’s opening and closing dates as well as the required documents to give yourself enough time to prepare everything and submit your application on time.

NSFAS

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme offers government scholarships to students from families with incomes of R350 000 or less who want to attend or are already attending a public university or TVET college (NSFAS).
The bursary provides funds for transportation, housing, living expenses, and educational materials in accordance with the most recent DHET-approved requirements.

All South African citizens, recipients of SASSA grants, applicants with a combined household income of R350 000 or less annually, individuals with disabilities with a household income of R600 000 or less annually, and students who began their studies before 2018 with a household income of R122 000 or less annually are all eligible.

The application period for 2024 is open from September 1 through November.

University Financial Assistance, Scholarships, and Bursaries

• For the benefit of students, each university offers supplementary financial programs. Each university oversees the administration of merit, athletic, and other bursaries.
• To learn more about university-managed student financial aid, bursaries, or scholarships, search the university’s website or get in touch with the institution.

External Funding

• Outside of the university, funding is also available from businesses and organizations. One can find information by using a google search.

6. Find accommodation

• Each university provides a range of housing alternatives, including dorms, apartments, and rooms. For additional information, get in touch with the student housing office at the university.
• Another choice is private lodging. Students may want to think about renting a room in a private home, an apartment, a student house, or a privately maintained student housing facility.
• Most institutions offer assistance to students looking for private housing. For assistance, students should get in touch with the university’s student housing office. Students can also use the internet to search for private housing possibilities or speak with local real estate brokers or student housing representatives.

MATRIC EXEMPTION

• Upon receiving their final grades, students who plan to enroll in a South African university must apply for a degree study exemption.
