Metropolitan Raucall is a GDE high school that receives funding from UJ and Metropolitan Life. The school was founded in 1992 by the then-Rand Afrikaans University in order to assist students from township schools. Students were chosen based on their aptitude for mathematics and science. Metropolitan has collaborated with RAU on this project since 1994 and is still involved today. The focus of the school curriculum package has not changed. However, the selection criteria have become less exclusive.

The school currently has just over 500 students, with just under 100 matriculants this year. We have had a 100% pass rate every year since our first matric group in 1996, with an average of 80% of students qualifying.

The FET phase includes seven subjects: English as a first language, Afrikaans as a second language, mathematics, science, accounting, economics, and life orientation. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare students for tertiary education and professional careers in these fields.

Several factors contribute to the school’s success. Our sponsors, as well as the education department, are extremely helpful. The teachers are committed, hardworking, and knowledgeable in their fields. The school governing body is involved in all school-related matters. The vast majority of parents are completely cooperative. The students are disciplined and focused on their academic performance.

RAUCALL provides a variety of co-curricular activities in addition to the academic program. One of these is the school choir, which participates in local competitions and public events on a regular basis. Students also compete in a number of Olympiads and other competitions. There are also opportunities to participate in debates, chess tournaments, and play productions. Throughout the year, various outings are planned.

Metropolitan entered the international competition for the Stevie Award for the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program. They were awarded the prize for Africa and Asia. The award ceremony took place in Ireland in September of 2008.

According to a Sunday Times survey conducted during the school year, the school was ranked among the top ten public schools in the country.
