Course Overview

An innovative course called HNC Healthcare Practice aims to provide you with fundamental clinical knowledge and comprehension. You will be ready for an undergraduate degree in nursing and other health-related fields after taking this course.

This course is a first step toward a rewarding career in the health sector and will enhance your academic, professional, and employability skills. It combines the required academic knowledge with clinical placement skills and competencies in the care industry. If you want to work as a Health Care Support Worker, this qualification is also right for you.

Please be aware that NHS Lothian employees can enroll in this course while continuing to work as Clinical Support Workers. The staff at Edinburgh Napier University can transition into year two of the BN Nursing program after completing the HNC. Only NHS Lothian employees have access to this preferred option, which was developed through collaboration between Edinburgh College, Edinburgh Napier University, and NHS Lothian.

Please note, however, that this HNC will enable you to apply for a university healthcare degree program’s first year. HNC Healthcare Practice   
(Previously HNC Care and Administrative Practice)

Staff who are currently employed by NHS Lothian as Clinical Support Workers or Nursing Auxiliary can take this course. You will be offered direct entry into the second year of the Nurse Education Program at Edinburgh Napier University once you successfully complete the HNC.

Full time is over 1 year, 2 college days & 1 study day per week
Part time is over 2 years, 1 college day and ½ day study per week
Course Objectives
  • The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Healthcare Practice is the goal of the course. This enables you to enter the second year of the Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disabilities, and Child Health Pre-Registration Nursing Program with agreed-upon access arrangements to Edinburgh Napier University.
  • The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and National Health Service Education for Scotland (NES) have given their approval to the HNC program. The completion of the HNC course, satisfactory attendance at work and school, an occupational health check, and a PVG Disclosure Check are all prerequisites for admission to Edinburgh Napier University.

Funding

  • The Student Awards Agency for Scotland covers the full-time tuition costs. The Scottish Government pays for the part-time course fees. The costs of replacing your workplace’s part are covered by the Scottish Government. You will begin Year 2 of the Pre-Registration Nursing Program at Edinburgh Napier University after successfully completing the HNC.
Entry Requirements
  • Prior to the application deadline, the applicant must have worked as a Clinical Support Worker/Healthcare Assistant for at least one year at NHS Lothian.
    By the deadline, applicants must have earned a minimum of SVQ Level 2, a Care Certificate, or a National Progression Award-Skills for Practice. Individually, applicants with additional qualifications will be taken into consideration.
    Their Charge Nurse/Line Manager and the relevant Clinical Nurse Manager must support the application. Before the candidate submits any application, this support needs to be agreed upon. Applications will not be moved forward without such assistance.

    As the HNC Healthcare Practice course specifically leads to the second year of the Nursing Degree Programme at Edinburgh Napier University, the visa status required is Indefinite Leave to Remain. For applicants who do not speak English as their first language, there will be a minimum requirement of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent achieved by the closing date. For applications to the full-time HNC (1 year duration), applicants must be contracted to work a minimum of 35 hours per week from the date the course commences. For applications to the part-time HNC Anyone pursuing a nursing degree program in Scotland must meet this requirement.

By the deadline, evidence of indefinite leave to remain must be included in the application package.
