Technical Vocational and Education Training (TVET) colleges concentrate on vocational and occupational education and training in order to prepare students to become functioning workers in a skilled trade.
With 50 licensed skills training institutes spread throughout South Africa, studying at a TVET college is an excellent option.
TVET colleges are part of the South African education system, and they mix education, training, and skill development by offering a wide range of courses in which students can enroll and receive certifications.
TVET colleges provide four primary categories of qualifications:
The National Certificate: Vocational (NCV)
The National Certificate: Vocational (NCV) is a skills-focused qualification designed to meet the country’s skill requirement.
Do not mix up an NCV with an NSC (National Senior Certificate).
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) and a National Certificate: Vocational have distinct characteristics (NCV). An NSC provides pupils with a more general education (Grades 1–12), with a larger emphasis on academics.
- An NCV is intended for vocational education. Students learn skills in a particular field of work.
- An NCV is normally a three-year program that is aimed to educate students with both academic and practical skills, as well as the ability to experience workplace scenarios while learning.
- National Certificate: Vocational students must have finished grade 9.
- Some institutions accept NCV degrees, although it is dependent on the course and its requirements, as well as the university’s admission standards.
The Report 191 Programmes
- Students must have a matric certificate to enroll in National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) programs.
- The programs include 18 months of academic study at colleges and 18 months of relevant practical application in the workplace.
- For a student to be awarded the National N Diploma, Level 6, the theoretical portion of the program must be followed by a minimum of 18 months of the practical application of knowledge in the workplace.
- This qualification expands a student’s technical and theoretical understanding, as well as the workplace knowledge and abilities needed in their chosen occupational/vocational field.
The National Introductory Certificate (N4)
- The National Introductory Certificate (N4) is a bridge course that prepares students for admission to the N4-N6 programs.
- It is an excellent choice for students who do not meet the academic requirements for direct entry into the National N4 – N6 qualification but wish to continue their education.
- This qualification is normally studied over the course of one year.
- The architecture of the degree allows learners to gain the qualification progressively by completing the associated N4, N5 and N6 courses in a specific vocational/occupational sector, either independently with pauses in between, or in one longer study period of a year or 18 months.
National Certificates (N4)
- The first course in any NATED Programme is a National N4 Certificate.
- An N4 from a TVET college indicates that you have mastered the fundamental skills required for a NATED Programme.
- After completing and passing the N4 National Certificate, students can apply for the N5 National Certificate.
- Many students who have finished their N4 National Certificate can progress to the next course (the N5 National Certificate), which is followed by the N6 National Certificate, which is followed by the N6 National Diploma.
