The time when obtaining a job required a college degree is long past.
A traditional academic institution’s degree used to be a prerequisite for employment, but that is no longer the case.
With the help of their chosen courses, graduates from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges who possess vocational skills now have better employment prospects.
This is because of:
- • Only a small percentage of young people who enter the labor market are typically TVET graduates;
- • To address and correct the qualification bias that has long been putting these graduates last;
- • The majority of TVET colleges provide technical training, which is crucial for any nation’s industrial development;
- • They possess the employability skills necessary to guarantee productivity; and
- • Businesses can obtain substantial funding to employ TVETs as part of their required work experience at no cost to the company.
After graduating, TVET students should be proactive and explore all of their options.
7% of university graduates were unemployed, compared to 33% of TVET graduates, according to Statistics South Africa.
Due to this, the government is now actively working to ensure that TVET graduates with N6 certificates are employed in both the public and private sectors. Learnerships and internships are available through the higher education department, which offers graduates incentives of up to R6000 per month.
Youth unemployment, whether they have degrees or not, is high, and the country is experiencing a severe skills shortage, which isn’t helping to reduce unemployment in general. The fact that there are jobs available in the fields that TVET graduates study can give them some solace.
