For the most accurate and current details, it is recommended to visit the official UKZN website or contact the university’s admissions office directly. Typically, universities outline specific criteria such as academic qualifications, standardized test scores, language proficiency exams, and any additional documentation necessary for the application process. It is essential to consult the official UKZN sources for the most precise and detailed information regarding the undergraduate requirements for the upcoming academic year

National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate
  • 1.1 Applicants for an undergraduate degree must hold a National Senior Certificate for Degree Studies (NSC-Deg) or a Senior Certificate with endorsement.
  • 1.2 Undergraduate diploma applicants must have a National Senior Certificate for Diploma Studies (NSC-Dip) or Senior Certificate.
 2. Medium of Instruction
  • The medium of instruction at UKZN is English, and a Level 4 (50% or higher) pass in English (Home Language or First Additional Language (FAL)) is required. The College of Law, on the other hand, requires a pass in English Home Language at Level 5 or English as FAL at Level 6. Admission to Diplomas or Alternative Access programs may be possible despite a lower English proficiency. The Senior Certificate requires a pass in English at First or Second Language HG E.
3. Life Orientation
  • All UKZN degree programs require Level 4 life orientation. A Level 3 pass may be considered by Access Programs.
 4. Minimum Composite Academic Performance Score
  • (NSC-Deg and Senior Certificate)
For admission, each program has established a minimum composite Academic Performance Score. This is the minimum required for consideration, and students who achieve only this minimum will not be admitted. APS is used to rank applicants to programs, and selection is done from the top down until the number of available spots in the specific program is filled. There is fierce competition for places, and applicants who do not meet the APS for a specific program are unlikely to be considered.
5. Subject requirements and Levels of Performance
  • For admission to UKZN programs, subject requirements and minimum levels of performance in specific subjects are also established. Applicants who did not include the correct subjects in their NSC-Deg or did not achieve the required level of performance in specific subjects required for program admission will be disqualified.
