This editorial contains details on Sassa grants for fiscal year 2024-2025.

The South African government assists those in need with social assistance. In South Africa, the SASSA manages social grants. People who are on the verge of going hungry and need help raising their standard of living receive government handouts. These are typically the elderly, parents of small children, and people with disabilities. Only South African citizens, lawful permanent residents, and refugees are eligible for social grants. They must also be South African citizens.

What is a means test?

  • There is a “means test” for some social benefits, including child support, disability, care dependency, and social relief of distress. Based on your income and assets, SASSA will use the means test to determine if you qualify for a social grant. Your eligibility for a grant intended for people who cannot afford to live independently is determined by the means test.

Care dependency allowance

Parents of disabled children who work full-time may be eligible for care dependency grants. How much money, in total, will be distributed as part of this grant?

  • R1 860 per child, per month.

How do you know if you’re approved for the grant?

  • To qualify for the care dependency award, the child must be under the age of 18 and medically determined to be permanently incapacitated. If you’re married, you and your spouse must both meet the qualifying requirements for the means test. The articles listed below will help you with your Sassa application.
