The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is governed by Section 32 of the Social Assistance Act of 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004), and it is granted with the approval of the Minister of Finance.
For South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and Special Permit Holders between the ages of 18 and 60 who have insufficient means, are not contributing to or are eligible for UIF payment, and have no other source of support, the Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is available.
Applicants or their representatives must confirm or supply the following information in order for SASSA to examine their application.

It is important to mention
- Please keep in mind that all information will be provided electronically, and no documents will be required to be uploaded. Please supply SASSA with a Mobile Number (cell phone number) where we may reach you to provide you with status updates on your application. This website also allows you to check the status of your application. If your application is denied, you will be able to appeal the SASSA decision by filing an appeal with the Department of Social Development for each month your application was denied. When you receive notification that your application has been denied, you will be given instructions on how to file an appeal. Failure to file an appeal for each month the application is denied will result in the original decision being upheld.
