The Education and Training of Nurses and Midwives Act 4 of 2003 created Lilitha College of Nursing. The Act’s purpose was to:

  • Eliminate the various pieces of apartheid legislation that were responsible for the establishment of the various nursing colleges in the Eastern Cape Province;
    Create a single college with five main campuses and 19 sub-campuses spread out throughout the Eastern Cape Province to meet the needs of the EC health system for nurse education.

The programs provided are determined by the needs, priorities, and demographics of the health system and the EC Province. The college offers both entry-level and advanced nursing programs, as well as specialty programs. It has consistently produced a sizable number of nurses who are permanently assigned to the province’s clinical services. The college supports academic excellence in learning by incorporating research on human experiences of health, illness, and healing as well as community-based and evidence-based practice that emphasizes relationships centered around a caring attitude that promotes people’s well-being.
