The University of Pretoria’s Chemical Engineering program aims to produce graduates who can develop new and creative processes, assuring continuing growth to meet the aforementioned needs.
Chemical engineering contributes to many aspects of human life, including the production of food and energy, the provision of clean water and sanitation, the provision of shelter and health care, and the production of other value-added commodities through chemical, biological, and physicochemical processes. Unfortunately, unexpected consequences of these processes have resulted in severe harm to human lives and the environment. The training provided at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Chemical Engineering equips our graduates with the necessary skills to eliminate or reduce the negative ecological footprints of unsustainable chemical engineering activities by closing material cycles and creating value-added commodities from waste products of these processes using green and sustainable processes, as illustrated below.
Furthermore, the training is interdisciplinary, with the goal of developing and creating graduates with critical thinking skills capable of providing solutions to societal problems confronting South Africa, Africa, and the world at large. Our professors and researchers have strong academic credentials combined with a wealth of knowledge and experience to give our graduates long-term training. The Department is also outfitted with cutting-edge technology to support our teaching and research programs.
