Aside from public universities, TVET colleges are frequently the best alternative option for post-secondary education. But, in terms of paying fees, are they completely free?

The term Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) refers to the occupational nature of the courses offered at higher education institutions.

This means that TVET colleges prepare learners for vocational employment opportunities while also allowing them to become employers. There are currently fifty registered TVET colleges in South Africa, but are they tuition-free?

To ensure that public TVET colleges are accessible and affordable, the Department of Higher Education and Training subsidize 80% of the delivery costs, and loans are available to help students pay their tuition fees.

You may also be wondering who is eligible to attend a TVET college. The benefit of attending a TVET college over a public university is that they are more accessible.

Who can study at a TVET college?

  • Students who have completed Grade 12
  • People who dropped out of school before finishing Grade 12, including those who failed matric, could, for example, pursue a National Certificate (Vocational) at Level 4, which is equivalent to Grade 12.
  • Adults who wish to pursue formal education in study fields offered by TVET colleges.

Students frequently inquire whether the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funds TVET Colleges.

The answer is that NSFAS does provide funding for students attending TVET Colleges as well as public universities.

NSFAS covers registration fees, tuition, and monthly allowances.

The following are the NSFAS requirements:

  • You are a South African national.
  • You are eligible for funding if you are a SASSA grant recipient.
  • You have an annual household income of no more than R350 000.
  • Individuals with a disability: The combined household income cannot exceed R600,000 per year.

For the 2021 academic year, NSFAS will transition students from all TVET colleges who currently receive their allowances through the NSFAS Wallet and institutional disbursement services to a direct payment system in which allowances will be deposited directly into students’ bank accounts.

If you intend to enroll in a public TVET college in 2021, you must first open a bank account in order to receive allowances through bank accounts.

All applicants will be notified of their application status once NSFAS receives confirmation from the institution that an academic offer has been made to them. This will be communicated to you via SMS, email, and your myNSFAS account prior to the start of the academic year.

Once you have been approved for NSFAS funding, you will be covered until you complete your qualification. This is subject to your continued fulfillment of the academic criteria.
