The University of Pretoria (UP) Faculty of Law (UP Law) aspires to be an internationally recognized leader in socially relevant legal research and education in South Africa and around the world. The Faculty’s purpose in implementing its vision is to create and sustain a research and education environment based on the ideals of social justice and excellence. We have put in place the essential structures and procedures to ensure that our graduates have the advice and assistance they need to graduate on time.

According to THE rating (THE World University Rankings 2022), UP Law ranks first in Africa and 60th in the world for the fifth consecutive year. Unparalleled in Africa!

The Faculty currently employs roughly 66 full-time academics, approximately two-thirds of whom hold PhD degrees in various fields of law, allowing them to prepare our student population for the various legal-related job options.

Seen from one perspective, the Faculty of Law consists of staff, students and the building. It is, however, also much more than that: It reflects an idea, that of a society controlled by the rule of law rather than by individuals. This approach is pursued by our Faculty by focusing on the law and on excellence in all areas of jurisprudence. It is also pursued through focusing on jurists and preparing our students to become community leaders who can effectively advocate the law and its principles.
