An occupational therapist (OT) is a health practitioner who assists patients in developing, recovering and improving the abilities required for everyday living and working. Their patients have typically lost these talents due to mental, physical, developmental, or emotional disabilities.
Occupational therapists commonly perform the following tasks:
- examine a patient’s medical history, interrogate the patient, and observe them performing duties
- assess a patient’s condition and requirements
- create a treatment plan
- assist persons with varied disabilities with various tasks
- Use physical workouts to assist patients in increasing their strength and dexterity.
Use activities to assist patients to improve their visual acuity and pattern recognition. - Utilize computer programs to assist customers in improving their decision-making, abstract reasoning, problem-solving, memory, sequencing, coordination, and perceptual skills.
- teach the patient’s family and employer how to adapt and care for the patient
- recommend and train patients on how to utilize specific equipment such as wheelchairs and feeding aids analyze and record patients’ activities and progress for patient evaluations, billing, and reporting to physicians and other health care providers
