University of Venda

  • Registration for new and returning students begins on January 25.

Students are registering for classes online.

  • The new academic year begins on February 14. Blended and multi-modal learning will continue, but on-site learning will be prioritized for first-year students.
  • The University of Venda Council approved a mandatory vaccination program. On campus, students are encouraged and assisted in getting vaccinated. There will be no student denied an education.

University of Pretoria

  • New students can register beginning January 25 and seniors beginning February 1. The lectures will begin on February 21. (either virtually or on campus)

Registration is online.

  • During the fourth quarter of 2024, UP began admitting a limited number of students under strict health regulations. Their plan is for a larger re-opening for the 2024 academic year. However, spokesperson Rikus Delport stated that it is not possible to resume all contact classes right away while ensuring everyone’s safety. They are currently considering introducing face-to-face classes for at least some of the programs on a rotating basis. 
  • The university is taking proactive measures to ensure that an appropriate plan for the re-opening of its campuses for the 2024 academic year is in place. The process must be carefully managed, taking into account the risks involved.

Cape Peninsula University of Technology

  • CPUT registration has already begun, with 16403 people signing up so far. Courses begin at different times, but the academic year will begin in February.

The registration procedure is entirely online.

  • The CPUT has not made a decision regarding the return of on-site learning. Their COVID command center makes that decision based on a variety of factors. CPUT has been designated as a low-risk institution, and they intend to keep it that way by adhering to the standard covid safety protocols and encouraging our community to take responsibility for themselves and others.
  • They have not made a decision on vaccine policy and are being guided by current lockdown regulations and laws.

University of KwaZulu Natal

In the 2022 academic year, the University of KwaZulu-Natal hopes to enroll over 46 000 students. There are approximately 10,000 first-year student positions available. Until further notice, the university will continue to offer online teaching and learning. Only practical and clinical training will be provided in person.

Registration is ongoing and takes place online.

  • Online registration: Monday 10 January – Friday, 25 February;
  • The first semester and Lectures commence: Monday, 14 February;
  • Final date for minimum fee payment required for registration: Friday, 25 February;
  • Final date for semester 1 registration: Friday, 25 February;
  • Final date for curriculum changes: Friday, 25 February.

The university is currently discussing mandatory vaccinations for faculty and students. Students are encouraged to vaccinate through regular, accurate communications, direct messaging via social media platforms and notification systems of available facilities and the importance of vaccinations.

North-West University

Full-time first-year students can register online beginning January 25 and ending February 16. Full-time senior and returning students can register online beginning January 31 and continue until February 18.

Students should register online and do not need to come to campus to do so.

  • The new academic year begins on February 21. This page contains all information about on-site learning and COVID measures. Vaccination at the NWU is currently voluntary. The university is currently finalizing vaccination requirements and an accompanying standard operating procedure, which will be communicated to students in the near future.
  • There are no walk-ins or late applications accepted.

Central University of Technology

CUT is preparing to welcome approximately 4677 first-year students in 2024. CUT first-year registration will begin on January 26 for new students and on February 3 for returning students.

There will be no walk-ins, and students are encouraged to check their application status online.

  • All registrations for 2024 will be completed online. Students who have received an acceptance letter will be notified of the registration process, which will be accompanied by a step-by-step video.
  • CUT encourages students to get immunized. Both campuses of the university have vaccination stations.

University of Stellenbosch

  • SU has had online registration for several years, and most students will be able to register for the 2024 academic year online. Undergraduate classes begin on February 14 (with the exception of some MB,ChB clinical rotations).
  • In late 2023, the University’s Institutional Committee for Business Continuation decided to have a full return to campus and the classroom for the 2024 academic year. For the first semester of 2024, the university will continue to use augmented remote teaching, learning, and assessment. This is a versatile hybrid learning and teaching mode. The vaccination policy at the university is still being worked out.

Wits University

First-year students can register online from January 21 to 27. If assistance is required, it is available. In the last five years, most students registered online, with only a few coming to campus for assistance. For returning students, each faculty has its own set of dates and deadlines for both online and assisted registration.

The blended mode of instruction and learning will begin on February 28. This means that some activities, such as experiential learning and interactive learning and teaching sessions, will take place on campus. Presentations, discussion forums, and formative assessments will also be conducted online.

The COVID-19 mandatory vaccination policy was approved by the Wits Council and went into effect on January 1, 2024. Everyone will, however, have until March 1, to get vaccinated or apply for reasonable accommodations.

Tshwane University of Technology

  • FTEN student registration will begin on January 31. The online system has been improved, with all mandatory first-year subjects pre-selected and registered first-year learners confirmed. The deadline for registration is February 25. The first day of classes will be February 10.

There will be no walk-in student admissions. Students who have trouble registering online will be assisted in TUT laboratories.

  • The risk levels of Covid-19 will be assessed before the start of academic activities and throughout the 2024 academic year. Mask-to-mask classes will be considered in terms of venue capacity if risk levels allow. TUT is in the process of developing a policy on Covid-19 vaccination and will be able to comment once that draft has gone through the consultation process.

University of Free State

Senior students can get academic advice and register online from January 17 to 31, and first-year students can do so from February 1 to 11.

All freshmen and seniors will register online.

  • The new academic year begins on February 14. UFS is preparing for the return of all staff and registered students in 2024in a risk-averse manner. Classes will be held on campus in 2024, with the exception of a few qualifications and modules that will be delivered in a blended format.
  • Beginning February 14, 2024, UFS will implement its COVID-19 Regulations and Required Vaccination Policy. No one is required to vaccinate under the policy. “It is intended to limit campus access to vaccinated persons,” with medical and religious exemptions.

University of the Western Cape

  • On January 10, 2024, online registration for Master and Ph.D. students began. Registration for senior undergraduate and honors students begins on January 24 and ends on February 11. Hybrid-assisted registration for first-year and returning undergraduate students begins on January 31 and ends on February 11.
  • The student portal and e-advising platforms will be used for registration. Certain programs will offer in-person curriculum advising, which will be communicated to students along with specific dates and times.
  • The new academic year will begin on February 14. The approach will be hybrid/blended. If national regulations allow, in-person classes will be held in 2024. Most faculties will also continue to offer flexible online learning and teaching in 2024. To enter the campus or attend university events, all staff and students must be vaccinated. As a result, unvaccinated students will be unable to attend classes on campus, but flexible online learning and teaching will be available in most faculties until 2024. Staff, students, and anyone else (such as service providers and visitors) will be required to be vaccinated before being allowed on campus. This policy became effective on January 3.

Mangosuthu University of Technology

  • For new and returning students, MUT registration for the 2024academic year is scheduled for February 14-25, 2024. Students are encouraged to use the MUT online registration platform, which allows them to register from anywhere without coming to campus. In accordance with the COVID-19 protocols, this is intended to reduce the risk of large groups gathering at the university. The academic year at MUT begins on February 14, 2024. MUT, like all other universities, follows the department’s lead on whether students can return to the university in full or in parts.
  • Before implementing a vaccination policy, MUT sought legal advice. According to the legal advice received, MUT should conduct additional research before deciding whether or not to make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory. The Committee has decided that the issue of COVID-19 mandatory vaccines will be referred to the Senate for approval.

University of Johannesburg  

Senior/returning student registration began on January 17, 2024, and will continue until February 11, 2024. In the case of first-year students, once the university selection process is completed, the UJ student enrolment center will notify applicants of their admission status via email. Undergraduate (first-year) registration begins on January 21 and will last three weeks. UJ has planned its academic activities for 2024 based on various scenarios, and the university is prepared to implement any of the scenarios based on the Covid-19 situation.

All registrations are completed both on and off campus.

  • Academic activities for first-year and senior students begin on February 14, 2024. In terms of on-campus learning, the University of Johannesburg’s council has decided that all of the university’s campuses and facilities will be mandatory vaccination sites beginning in 2024. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be considered. Access cards for fully vaccinated students will be activated for all campuses and facilities. Students who have been partially immunized are conditionally registered and have access to the campuses and facilities. Accommodation on campus will be available.
  • Students have until March 31, 2024, to comply with the conditional registration, i.e. become fully vaccinated, or their studies will be canceled.

Rhodes University 

Postgraduate registration began on January 10. Registration for first-year students will begin on February 12, and registration for returning students will begin on February 18.

The registration will be done online.

  • The first day of classes is scheduled for February 21. The university will monitor developments related to the pandemic and adjust its plans based on the virus’s evolution and trajectory. All students and staff are encouraged to get fully vaccinated. Rhodes University has implemented a vaccination mandate rule in order to prepare for a full return of staff and students to campus in 2024. They are taking a hybrid approach to many academic activities in order to prepare returning students for their return to campus in 2024.
  • Once their vaccination certificate has been verified, students will be able to continue with their online administration registration. They will only be allowed to continue if they have been granted an exemption if they have not been vaccinated.

University of Limpopo

  • The registration period runs from January 24 to January 28. Returning students will begin the academic year on January 24, while first-year students will begin on January 31.

Registration will take place remotely via their online services.

  • Their approach to teaching, learning, and assessment remains multimodal. Repatriation will be carried out in stages, guided by an ongoing risk assessment. The university has determined that it is critical that they do not rush into a vaccination policy. Final admission status will be available on their online services beginning January 21, 2024.

UNISA

First-semester registration at the University of South Africa began on January 4 and will end on January 24, 2024. Students may also register for semester 2 modules during this time if they wish. This is assuming that there are no module prerequisites. The registration period for the second semester will run from June 20 to July 18, 2024.

University of Cape Town

  • Orientation and registration will take place from February 1 to February 11. UCT will implement the First Year Campus Reception (FYCR) program, which will be implemented in 2024. On February 14, teaching and learning will begin. The teaching and learning process at the university is guided by a framework.
  • All students, whether South African or international, are expected to stay in Cape Town for the duration of the academic year and to visit campus as needed. Students will have more time to interact with academic staff. All face-to-face on-campus teaching and learning activities must have an online counterpart.
