The RN Compact States are a group of states that have entered into a compact agreement, which allows registered nurses (RNs) who hold a multistate license to practice in any of the participating states without having to obtain a separate license in each state. The compact is known as the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
As of March 2023, there are 34 RN Compact States, which are:
- Arizona

- Colorado
- Delaware
- Florida
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Maryland
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Montana
- Nebraska
- New Hampshire
- New Mexico
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Oklahoma
- South Carolina
- South Dakota
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming
- Guam
RNs who hold a multistate license can practice in any of the RN Compact States as long as they meet the compact’s eligibility requirements. The compact aims to facilitate the practice of telehealth and improve access to healthcare services across state lines, while also maintaining high standards of nursing practice and patient safety.
