The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) offers a range of social support grants to needy residents. In an effort to increase their support, they are now urging caregivers to apply for this funding.

Every month, the South African Social Security Agency gives out over 18 million awards (Sassa). The more than 5 million people who will qualify for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant in June 2024 are not included in this.

Sassa has encouraged non-parental caregivers to apply for the Extended Child Support Grant. This includes situations in which both parents are deceased or where the whereabouts of one of the parents are unknown.

According to the organization, the Extended Child Support Grant was created to avoid children without parents from having to go through the foster care system solely for financial reasons.

According to Sassa, “In order to qualify for the Extended Child Support Grant, the caregiver must produce the death certificates for both parents, or the primary parent’s death certificate along with an affidavit confirming that the other parent’s whereabouts are unknown and that he or she plays no role in caring for the child.”
