If you’ve been given approval for a SASSA grant but didn’t select to have your payment made into a bank account, you might be wondering how the other payment options operate. Here’s how to receive a payment if you don’t have a bank account.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides social relief grants to unemployed and financially needy persons.

If you applied for the SASSA grant and were granted it, you may be wondering how the grant payment procedure works if you did not want to receive your payment in a bank account.

Permanent social handouts are paid on specific dates each month. These grants begin on the second day of each new month. These grants include the disability grant, the grant for the elderly, and the foster care grant.

However, if you are a Social Relief Distress (SRD) grant recipient, you will not have a fixed payment date, whereas child support grant recipients are paid on the date ordered by the court.

Beneficiaries are allowed to choose which grant payment method works best for them.

Beneficiaries can receive their grant payments by making use of a SASSA card, and visiting merchants and retail stores.

Here is how R350 SRD grants are paid:

Post Bank/CashSend Services

  • You can also receive your R350 grant through a CashSend using PostBank services if you don’t have a bank account.
  • Beneficiaries can now access their award funds using their ID cards and phone numbers. The grant applicant must own the registered and personal cellphone number.

Checkers, PicknPay, Shoprite, Usave & Boxer Stores

  • SASSA said that beneficiaries can obtain their award by going to a Checkers, Boxer, or PicknPay store in an effort to increase the number of options for beneficiaries to receive their money and simplify SASSA grant payments.
  • Your grants cannot be picked up at BP Pick n Pay Express, Pick n Pay Clothing, or Pick n Pay Liquor locations.
  • Before going to the store, beneficiaries must wait for an SMS notifying them that their grant is ready for pickup.

SASSA Card

  • Award beneficiaries have the option of receiving their grant funds on their SASSA card. Unless the card is used for services that SASSA does not pay for, you are not responsible for any fees incurred by using the SASSA card account.
  • Officials from the South African Post Office will issue you a SASSA card if you decide to apply for one.
