The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) provides vulnerable citizens with a variety of social support grants. They are now encouraging caregivers to apply for this grant in an effort to broaden their support.

The South African Social Security Agency distributes around 18 million grants per month (Sassa). This does not include the more than 5 million persons who will be eligible for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant in June 2024.

Sassa has encouraged non-parental caregivers to apply for the Extended Child Support Grant. This includes situations in which both parents are deceased or where the whereabouts of one of the parents are unknown.

According to the organization, the Extended Child Support Grant was created to avoid children without parents from having to go through the foster care system solely for financial reasons.

According to Sassa, “In order to qualify for the Extended Child Support Grant, the caregiver must produce the death certificates for both parents, or the primary parent’s death certificate along with an affidavit confirming that the other parent’s whereabouts are unknown and that he or she plays no role in caring for the child.”
