On behalf of the Department of Social Development, the South African Social Security Organization (SASSA) was established as a national government body in April 2005. Additionally, the Department of Social Development receives reports, which gives the national government control over social security.

The Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution recognizes citizens’ socioeconomic rights. As a result, the government is gradually realizing this individual right through the use of readily available resources as well as reasonable legislative and other actions. It should be noted that the SASSA Act of 2004 governs SASSA.

Grants from Sassa are payable in May 2024-2025.

There are several options for social assistance:

a pension for the elderly; a grant for child support;
a grant for caregiving a child with severe disabilities; veterans’ grants, grants for people with disabilities;
aid to foster children;
Grant-in-aid for those who require a full-time caregiver, and/or Social relief of distress, a short-term solution in the form of packages or vouchers for those in desperate need. Steyn has committed R320 million to the coronavirus relief effort.

Applicants for the May 2024 Sassa Payment must provide the following information:

Department of Home Affairs or Identity Number Number of refugee permits
Gender and Disability Gender and Surname as recorded in the Identity Document

Residence Address
