The Older Person’s Grant, also known as the state old-age pension, is a monthly payment made to citizens, permanent residents, and refugees aged 60 and over who have no other source of income. This grant is intended to assist our elderly residents in managing their finances as they age.

You are eligible for an older person’s grant if you meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
  • South Africa is my home.
  • Are at least 60 years old.
  • Are not residents of a state institution.
  • Are not receiving payments from any other type of social grant.
  • Your spouse must pass the means test.
  • You must provide proof of your identity (ID).
  • You cannot earn more than R86 280 as a single person or R172 560 as a married person.
  • You have no assets worth more than R1 227 600 if single, or R2 455 200 if married.

The means test

Only people with a monthly income below a certain threshold are eligible for the grant. A means test is used to determine this.

Because social assistance, like state grants, is intended for people who are unable to support themselves, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) examines the applicant’s income and assets to determine whether or not the person qualifies for a grant.

How much is the old person’s grant?

  • Every year, the amount of the old-age grant changes. Currently, the maximum amount you can receive per month is R1 980. If you are over the age of 75, you will receive R2 000. Any changes in grant amounts are announced in the national budget speech or at the start of Parliament each year.
What you need to know about the grant application process
You can apply for the old age grant by filling out an application form and bringing the following information with you to your nearest SASSA office:
  • Your official identity document (ID).
    • If you don’t have an ID:
      • You must complete an affidavit on a standard SASSA form in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths who’s not a SASSA official.
      • You must bring a sworn statement signed by a credible person who can verify your name and age (such as a counselor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion, or school principal).
      • Your fingerprints will be taken by a SASSA official. While your application is being processed, you will be referred to the Department of Home Affairs to apply for the ID. If you do not obtain an ID, your grant will be revoked.
  • Proof of your marital status (if applicable).
  • Proof of your address.
  • Proof of your income and/or dividends.
  • Evidence of your assets, including the value of your property.
  • Evidence of your private pension (if any).
  • Your last three months’ bank statement.
  • If you were previously employed, you should have an Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) (‘blue book’) or a discharge certificate from your previous employer.
  • If your spouse died within the last 5 years, please provide a copy of their death certificate, will, and first and final liquidation and distribution accounts, if applicable.

Please keep in mind that if you are too old or sick to travel to the office, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf. The person should be given a letter from you and/or a doctor’s note explaining why you are unable to visit the office.

In the presence of the SASSA officer, fill out the application form. The officer will interview you and determine whether you are eligible for the grant.

Despite the fact that the application is free, you will be given a receipt. Keep it as evidence that you applied.
