Accommodation for students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

Edgewood
  • On the Edgewood campus, residence halls are available. Catering and self-catering options are available. There are 631 students living in 11 residences on campus. Women make up 55% of the population and are housed separately from men. There are single and double rooms available. Some residences offer self-catering facilities. All residences have access control doors installed. Post-graduate students have access to five additional flats, each of which houses five students.
Howard College & Medical School
On-Campus Residences
  • In Durban, the Howard College and Medical School residences house approximately 2162 students. There is fierce competition for available positions, and it is not possible to accept all applicants. Charles Smith Hall and Albert Luthuli Hall are the two residence halls. Charles Smith Hall consists of 12 individual residences located near the main academic buildings, banks, shops, and the Medical School. Albert Luthuli Hall is made up of the Cluster Residence and the six-story Tower Residence. This complex is located on the Howard College campus’s western side, away from the academic buildings but close to most sports fields and the Old Mutual Sports Centre. There is access control, lounges and television rooms, intercom systems, call boxes, and parking. Off-Campus Residences
Mixed Gender Residence – St Hillier
  • St Hillier is made up of fully furnished two and three-bedroom apartments. Every student has his or her own bedroom. All occupants share the lounge, kitchen, and bathroom. There is also a laundry room and parking. St Hillier is in Umbilo, directly across from Queensmead Shopping Mall, and is only a few minutes walk from the Medical School campus. It is on the Howard College bus route.
J V Smit Residence
  • There are 90 large single rooms in this residence, as well as entertainment and study areas and tennis courts. It’s a catering business. Laundry and parking facilities are available. J V Smit is close to the Medical School campus and a bus route to Howard College and the city.
Pietermaritzburg
  • Approximately 1 640 students are housed in residences. One-third of the students enrolled live in one of the four residence halls. Contact the Student Housing helpdesk for assistance with off-campus housing.
Petrie Hall Of Residence
  • Petrie Hall is primarily a residence hall for first and second-year female students. The three large residences are Eleanor Russell Hall, University Hall, and Lodge, which are located near the Science Block, Administration, Student Services, the library, tennis courts, shops, Post Office, and banks. A student committee oversees the smooth operation of student life in all residences.
William O’Brien Hall Of Residence
  • The William O’Brien residence (men) is located on campus and is made up of single rooms spread across six blocks with communal kitchens. Extracurricular activities are catered to by the residence sports program, senior and junior lounges, a large communal games room, and a visitor’s reception lounge. There is also a braai area, car repair and wash bays, and secure parking for all residents’ cars.
Malherbe Hall Of Residence
  • Malherbe Residence (men and women) is direct across from the University gate on Durban Road. Male and female guests share the common rooms and TV lounge. A quadrangle with trees, shrubs, and grass surround the residence, where students can play ball games or relax. There is also a braai area. Walking distance from the Students’ Union, the Science Block, the Old Arts Block, shops, banks, and the Post Office. However, the New Arts Block, Commerce, Law, Agriculture, and Life Sciences Blocks are only a 10-minute walk away. The Malherbe Flats are known as Brucian House and Robleigh House (postgraduate students). They are ideal for small groups of students who want to share housing and have three, four, or five bedrooms. It is not possible to share a room with another person. The majority of the rooms are furnished and self-contained. Several lock-up garages are available for rent.
Denison Hall Of Residence
  • Denison (men and women) is situated in a quiet park-like setting on the old golf course portion of campus. Denison has its own kitchen complex and clubhouse, which includes a large communal lounge and the Denison pub. There is a gym, TV, snooker, and table tennis in the residence.
Westville
  • Off-campus and self-catering flats, as well as on-campus residences with meals available upon request, are available on the Westville campus.
On-Campus Residences
  • On campus, there are 1810 students. There is fierce competition for available positions, and it is not possible to accept all applicants. S-Block, R-Block, P-Block, and O-Block are the four residential blocks. The O-Block is exclusively for females, whereas the others are mixed. There is access control, television rooms, and parking at each residence. All residences are self-contained, with the exception of O-Block, which still has a dining facility.
Off-Campus Residences
  • Off-campus housing is home to 713 students. The competition is fierce, and accepting all applications is impossible. These apartments come completely furnished. Postgraduate students can request a single room if one is available. All students share double rooms. All occupants share the kitchen and bathroom. The Bedford Hall and San Sabil residences are located in town on Hospital Road. Dunstaple Heights is located on Varsity Drive, whereas Santa Cruz is only for postgraduate students and is located in Reservoir Hills.
Admission to Residences
Applications
  • Local first-year applicants must submit an application to the Central Applications Office for admission to University residence (CAO). A separate application is not required. It is not always possible to accommodate a student in his or her preferred location.
  • International students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal must apply for housing.
  • The application deadline for undergraduate applicants is September 30.
Selection
  • Admission is based on need, academic potential, financial ability, and distance from home.
  • If applicants are admitted to the University, the University cannot guarantee that they will be assigned to a residence hall, and they may be required to find off-campus housing.
  • A Residence Code of Conduct will be required of all students.
Residence Fees
  • In 2021, residence fees would consist of an R25 892 annual accommodation charge. The accommodation deposit for local students is R2750 (2018). These fees do not include meals. (A year’s worth of meals costs about R23 980.) International students must pay 25% of their residence fees before registering. In student housing, bed linen is not provided.
Meals
  • All residences in Pietermaritzburg, Howard College, Edgewood, and Westville have self-catering facilities. Students are responsible for preparing their own meals. Students are responsible for providing their own crockery, cutlery, pots, and other cooking utensils. There are also food options on campus. Linen, Laundry And Cleaning
  • Students are responsible for their own linen and laundry. All residences have their own laundry facilities. Students are also responsible for cleaning their own rooms.
Vacations
  • Students may request to stay in residence during vacations; cost information is available from Student Housing Offices.
