The steps required for applying to UKZN

  • You must have an email address to complete the application.
  • South African applicants will be required to provide identification. Foreign applicants must provide the numbers on their passports.
  • Once you have received your student number from UKZN, you must pay the application fee.
  • Check that your documents have been scanned according to the guidelines.

The following documents are required before applying.

  • Authenticated copy of your identification/passport
  • Copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate, O/A Levels, or other relevant school leaving qualification/certificate.
  • If you are an international applicant, you must provide proof that you are eligible for admission to degree studies at South African universities from Universities in South Africa (previously known as HESA). For more information, please see the undergraduate prospectus.
  • Please provide certified copies of your degree certificate(s), academic record, and certificate of conduct if you attended other universities.
  • Non-English speaking international applicants must provide proof of English proficiency.
  • The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluates previous qualifications obtained at a foreign university (outside South Africa).
  • You must submit a research proposal/proposed title for your dissertation/thesis if you are applying for a master’s or Ph.D.
  • To study in South Africa as an international student, you must have a valid study visa.
  • Before applying online, please ensure that you have read the guidelines above.
  • Please make sure you have all of the HESA/SAQA documents required to submit your application.
  • Please use the reference APPN when paying the application fee (followed by your student number).
  • Please allow the system between 24 and 48 hours to process your payment.
  • For the first time, South African Undergraduate applicants must apply through CAO at www.cao.ac.za.
