Postgraduate Diplomas (NQF 8)
Requirements
  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree in accordance with Rule GR7 (a) OR
  • Attained a level of competence as defined by rule GR7 (b)
  • A School/College may establish additional criteria for admission to study. College Handbooks are available at www.ukzn.ac.za.
  • Some schools/colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if the HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.

Duration

  • A minimum of two semesters must be taken consecutively. Unless approved by the Senate, all modules must be completed at the University.

Curriculum

  • In accordance with Senat-approved College rules, the curriculum will include advanced reflection, practice, and research methods in the area of specialization, as well as a sustained research project.
Bachelor of Honours Degrees (NQF 8)

  • Admission to that degree’s status under Rule GR7 (a) OR
  • Attained the level of competence specified in Rule GR7 (b)

Duration

Curriculum: One of the modules in the Honours degree curriculum must be a prescribed research project, which must account for at least 25% of the degree credits.

  • Admission to that degree’s status under Rule GR7 (a) OR
  • Attained a level of competence as defined by rule GR7 (b)

Coursework

  • Before the degree can be conferred, students must complete at least two consecutive semesters (full time) or four consecutive semesters (part time).
  • Periods of graduate-level attendance at another institution or College may be accepted with permission and in accordance with College regulations. (Consult with the appropriate school.)

  • Candidates must complete all modules, one of which is a dissertation on a Senate-approved research topic. Typically, the dissertation module will account for 33-50% of the degree’s credit value.

Research

  • Candidates must pursue an appropriate research program on a topic that falls within the scope of the University’s studies. Students must also adhere to any additional college/school requirements.

  • Students must complete four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters before the degree can be conferred (part-time).

Curriculum

  • Students must complete an approved research program on a topic related to their University studies. A program of this type must make a distinct contribution to the subject’s knowledge or understanding, as well as demonstrate originality through the discovery of new facts or the exercise of independent critical power. Students must also adhere to any additional requirements imposed by colleges/schools.
