The South African College, a high school for boys, was established in 1829. Increasing support from private and government sources allowed the College to grow into a full-fledged university from 1880 to 1900. This College will later be known as the University of Cape Town.

These short courses are generally delivered online, allowing students to learn at their own speed and on their own schedule. UCT also provides a summer school that runs for three weeks each January.

Students can also attend a Winter School in July, as well as year-round webinars, short courses, workshops, and lectures.
