To help you get through your retirement years, you might be able to get a grant. People over 60 are eligible for an older person’s award. This compensation was formerly known as the old age pension.

How do you know if you’re eligible?

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee is required.
  • Both the petitioner and the kid must be South African citizens.
  • Must be at least 60 years old.
  • The candidate must not be receiving any other type of social grant.
  • The candidate and his or her spouse must pass the means test.
  • The applicant cannot be housed or cared for in a state institution.
  • A 13-digit bar-coded identity document must be submitted by the applicant.

How much will you be paid?

  • You will be paid a maximum of R1 980 per month. If you are over the age of 75, you will receive R2 000.

How will you be compensated?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will pay you the grant in one of the following ways:

  • cash at a given pay point on a specific day electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service) (e.g. old age home).
  • Note: If you are unable to collect the money yourself, you can appoint a procurator or give someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf at the SASSA office.

When will your grant be evaluated?

  • SASSA will decide whether or not to review your grant. This decision will be based on your disclosed income when you apply for the grant. You will be notified three months in advance of the review date or the date the life certificate (evidence that you are still alive) is due. If you get your money from a bank, an institution, or a procurator, you must fill out a life certificate at the SASSA offices every year.

When can your grant be revoked?

Your grant may be suspended if any of the following occur:

  • when your circumstances change
  • the outcome of a review
  • if you fail to cooperate when your grant is reviewed
  • when you commit fraud or misrepresent yourself
  • if there was a mistake when your grant was approved.
