After realizing the demand for dental therapists, the then-Department of Health and Welfare made the decision to establish training facilities at the Ga Rankuwa Hospital in 1975. Prof. L. T. Tariaard, the first Dean of the Faculty, was hired on a part-time basis in 1980.

The dental complex was constructed beginning in 1984. The hospital was formally opened at the end of 1987 and has all the necessary clinical amenities.

The hospital has 234 dental offices available for clinical use, and the complex is home to a wide range of service labs. The hospital can treat about 600 patients a day thanks to its three on-site operating rooms.

The hospital was handed over from the Department of National Health and Population Development to the then Transvaal Provincial Administration, and later to the Gauteng Provincial Government, in July 1989.
