The South African School of Mines, was founded in Kimberley in 1896 and moved to Johannesburg as the Transvaal Technical Institute in 1904, before changing its name to the Transvaal University College in 1906 and becoming the South African School of Mines and Technology four years later, is where Wits University got its start. As Johannesburg expanded, more departments were established, and the name was changed to the University College, Johannesburg in 1920. The College was given full university status in 1922, and as of the first of March, it became the University of the Witwatersrand. The University was officially inaugurated seven months later with appropriate festivities. The University’s first Chancellor was Prince Arthur of Connaught, Governor-General of the Union of South Africa, and its first Principal was Professor Jan H. Hofmeyr.
