From 1967 to 2004, the greater Johannesburg region and its environs were served by the renowned South African institution of higher learning and research known as the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU). The University of Johannesburg was later formed by its merger with Technikon Witwatersrand and two campuses of Vista University.

  • A proposition to establish an Afrikaans University was unanimously approved by 468 conference participants on November 5th, 1968. On August 4th, 1965, a law passed by Parliament established such a university in Johannesburg. The RAU was formally inaugurated on February 24, 1968. Dr. Nicolaas Diederichs, who was South Africa’s finance minister at the time, served as the university’s first chancellor, and Prof. Gerrit Viljoen served as the institution’s first rector.
  • The first hostel for men was called “Afslaan” (Tee off), after the golf course it was located on, and the first home for women was called “Amper Daar” (Almost there).
  • The university transformed into a dual-language institution over time, providing almost all degree programs in both Afrikaans and English.
