- The University of Pretoria is a multi-campus public research university located in Pretoria, the administrative and de facto capital of South Africa (Universiteit van Pretoria in Afrikaans and Yunibesithi ya Pretoria in Northern Sotho). The fourth continuously operating institution in South Africa to receive university status, the university was founded in 1908 as the Pretoria campus of the Johannesburg-based Transvaal University College. The institution now has almost 53,000 students, up from 32 when it first opened in a single late Victorian home. On 1,190 hectares, seven outlying campuses were used to construct the institution (2,900 acres).
